Banking Conference Dress Code: What to Wear at Financial Services Events
Draško Georgijev Banking conferences operate on a different dress code register than fintech events. Traditional financial services—institutional banks, central banks, regulatory bodies, and payment infrastructure companies—maintain conservative professional standards that haven’t changed significantly in decades.
Understanding this distinction matters. Underdressing at a banking conference signals a lack of awareness of professional norms in the industry—which can affect how you’re received in meetings and networking interactions.
The Banking Conference Dress Code Baseline
Business formal is the standard at traditional banking conferences including:
- Sibos (SWIFT’s annual conference)
- EBAday
- Central banking conferences
- Regulatory summits
- Institutional investor conferences
- Clearing and settlement events
At these events, you will see very few people without suits or equivalent formal attire. The exceptions are usually tech vendor staff at exhibition stands, who may follow their company dress code.
Business Formal Attire for Banking Conferences
For Men
The standard:
- Dark two-piece suit (navy or charcoal preferred, black acceptable)
- Crisp white or light blue dress shirt
- Conservative tie—solid colors or subtle patterns
- Polished leather dress shoes (Oxford or Derby) with matching leather belt
- Minimal accessories: quality watch, subtle cufflinks if wearing French cuffs
What to avoid:
- Casual blazers without matching trousers (considered less formal in traditional banking settings)
- Bright colors or loud patterns
- Jeans of any shade
- Athletic or casual shoes
- Visible brand logos beyond subtle watch brands
For Women
The standard:
- Tailored trouser suit or skirt suit in dark or neutral tones
- Structured dress with a fitted blazer
- Formal separates—tailored blouse with dress trousers and blazer
- Conservative color palette: navy, charcoal, black, burgundy, camel, gray
- Closed-toe heels or smart flats
- Understated jewelry and accessories
What to avoid:
- Overly casual dresses without structured layering
- Very bright colors or bold patterns in conservative settings
- Open-toe shoes in formal banking sessions
- Casual or athletic footwear
Event-Specific Notes
Sibos: One of the world’s most formal banking conferences. Suits are universal. Exhibition stands see some company-branded attire, but meeting rooms and sessions are business formal throughout. Evening events at Sibos can be cocktail attire for gala dinners.
EBAday: European banking and payments professionals. Business formal across the board. The conference attracts senior banking executives, regulators, and infrastructure professionals.
Regulatory and central bank events: These are the most formal conference contexts in the industry. When meeting central bankers or regulators, full business formal is non-negotiable.
Banking technology conferences: Events that bridge banking and technology (core banking vendors, API banking events) may lean toward business casual, especially if fintech companies are significant attendees. Read your specific event carefully.
Mixing Fintech and Banking Events
Many professionals attend both fintech events (like Money20/20) and banking events (like Sibos) in the same conference season. The same wardrobe can span both with minor adjustments:
- A quality dark suit satisfies both formats
- For fintech events, remove the tie and opt for a quality blazer instead of a full suit jacket
- For banking events, add back the tie and suit jacket
The versatile wardrobe foundation: two quality suits (navy + charcoal) + quality blazers (that work stand-alone for fintech events) covers the full spectrum.
Conference Dinners at Banking Events
Banking conference dinners often require cocktail to semi-formal attire.
- Men: Dark suit, dress shirt, tie
- Women: Cocktail dress or formal separates
Some gala dinners at events like Sibos specify black tie. Always check the event invitation for the specific dress code.
